The Canadian Island CONTROLLED by America
This is the strangest border in North America. Canada’s Campobello Island is essentially controlled by the U.S. Because the city is only connected to America the residents who live on the island lead incredibly unique lives. Should this land mass even be part of Canada?
Everyone seems to know of a unique location for us to explore next. Let us know YOURS in the comments :)

A mapping error has left AMERICA and CANADA fighting over this territory for decades. This “Gray Zone” produces billions of dollars each year, but who really owns it? For the past 20 years it has operated under dual ownership… which has led to some questionable activity on both sides. Most notably, lobster fishers from America and Canada are up in arms. Will there ever be a resolve to this obsc...

I think the current conception of what a "home" is in this country is what is contributing to current homelessness now, and what will be a homelessness epidemic in the next 30-40yrs. What we in the US think of as a "home" is totally unsustainable. Not just the resources to _build_ it, but the unending consumption of power and water to live in it.. it can't go on.

The problem is the abundance of non-sensible laws made by the building departments in our nation. You can live in the most remote area and over time they will apply the strict building codes of the next big city which might be 150 miles away. Like no structure over 200 sqft can be built on your own land without a septic permit even on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. You might be lucky for a while, but then they will come and enforce their rules and make you tear everything down.

I was curious so I did a little more research. Do not be fooled into thinking they are anything but interesting architectural ideas built at enormous financial and material cost for the slightly more environmentally conscious upper class. They cost so much, the average person could never dream of building one. They cost a lot to maintain, and only in rare cases will occupants be completely off-grid (you will need supplemental water and electrical services, as well as trash services unless you can bring your personal waste to near zero). They are very cool architectural design challenges, but they are less sustainable than a well designed apartment complex that was designed with sustainable practices in mind. An apartment complex can house dozens of families for the same cost as housing one wealthy person who believes themselves to be personally saving the world. Meanwhile they likely have to get in their gas powered vehicles and drive long distances to get basic resources to supplement their NOT truly self sufficient lifestyle. The path to a more sustainable future is not to seclude individual families, or worse, individual people, in expensive desert homes made only partially from sustainable materials. The right direction is more likely building large scale sustainable systems for use by whole communities of people educated on sustainable practices. Instead of trying to figure out how we can allow single family homes to make less of an impact one expensive house at a time, lets put more time and energy into engineering large scale sustainable systems that work for many people at once. Living selfishly is not living sustainably. An entire million dollar home in the desert for a single occupant? That is a selfish, "leave me alone" mentality. Which is FINE! To each their own, I'm not exactly a people person. But you cannot claim moral superiority over anyone on the basis of your sustainability while living in a earthship home. Because it simply isn't sustainable in the ways you think, especially not long term. Check out some quotes from the article bellow. Quoting from theministryofarchitecture.com/earthships "In a dry environment, like New Mexico, it is not physically possible to collect enough rainwater to support the house. Many who have earthships have to get in their cars, drive 30 minutes to town each way, and buy water just to survive, let alone wash dishes or laundry. If you have more than 11 inches of rain per year THAT HIT THE GROUND, you might be alright, if you are a couple or only have one child and limit your water use." "Earthships don't work as they are intended. Not even here in New Mexico. The further you get away from new Mexico, the more issues they have. There is no such thing as a "global model" of ANY kind of architecture. Anyone who tries to sell that idea is selling snake oil." "Many people like to think that earthships are "natural." That is simply not accurate. They are beautiful, organically shaped objects that embrace recycling in a way that can help keep things out of the landfill - which is GREAT in principal. However, more than half of the volume of materials used in the build is concrete, which contributes 10% of the world's greenhouse gases and removes oxygen from the air you breathe - this can be a real issue if you have breathing issues or allergies, as you will be competing with your HOME for oxygen." "Despite the legends that the earthships are ultra-affordable for people who want to build their own homes and save money, there is actually no cost savings in designing and building an earthship over a conventional home, unless you can perform 100% of the work and obtain all the products yourself, and even if you can accomplish that, in the US, $150 per square foot will get you a bare-bones earthship that has all the same features of a "real" one. (You can do it for less, but it won't actually work like an earthship. Even a real earthship doesn't work. But it has a higher baseline of performance than most modified designs built for less.) This cost goes up depending on how craftsmanship-challenged you may be. It costs $225 per square foot to have Earthship Biotecture build your earthship. It also may take you up to 2 years to build your own earthship. In comparison, you can design and have built a home of "sustainable" construction in a few months, with NO effort, for the same amount of money. However, the sustainable they sell you, will be (only) slightly less sustainable than an earthship. The earthship that everyone wants to point to to say "hey look, these CAN work" is the Phoenix. It's gorgeous! And you too can have it for a mere ... wait for it... $1,500,000!!! But you probably won't be able to insure it or get a mortgage, so please have cash on hand." "Once the earthship settles, the breakdown of the rubber tires, which by nature was already in process, now happens in an enclosed environment. Which means, the gas expelled by the tires as they disintegrate collects in the walls, and then has the potential to release toxic vapors that you can't smell but could make the inhabitants sick. "They" will tell you that the walls are encased, and that by adding vents, that off-gassing is not a concern, which is only true as long as you replaster every surface EVERY YEAR and don't allow cracks anywhere on the tire wall, and as long as the gas doesn't find its way into any invisible pockets (which are unavoidable) that happen to NOT be near a vent. If the gas builds up in a closed system... well, think of a balloon... if you blow it up past its surface area, it bursts. If you try and encase the gas, it might work, for a while... but then what? We don't know and we aren't sure we trust the people that profit from these designs to tell the truth about how dangerous this could be. (That's kind of like asking Monsanto if GMOs are bad for you.) Here's a link to our collected scientific research on the subject." [hackingtheearthship.blogspot.com/p/earthship-academic-research.html]

The residents have no other choice they have to go through the Customs checkpoint that is the law. Canada is not obligated to make special arrangements, the only solution is to give it back to Canada and establish the border correctly. Canada did that with Denmark on the Canada, Greenland border.
